Windsor, Ontario highway greenspace and bike/walk path

Sam Schwartz was retained by the City of Windsor to develop mitigative interventions for a six-lane depressed highway planned through the city to a new international plaza and bridge crossing to Detroit, Michigan. Sam Schwartz introduced an urban design solution and vision for the city, called GreenLink Windsor, that would minimize the highway’s intrusion into neighboring communities and maximize the cohesion and interconnectivity potential of this six-kilometer corridor. The plan includes adding hundreds of acres of usable green space and providing an end-to-end pedestrian/bike path that would never cross a car at grade.

As part of this study Sam Schwartz analyzed and modeled numerous traffic scenarios. Simulations were also performed and presented to stakeholders and the community. Sam Schwartz worked closely with Windsor’s planning and engineering departments to involve local residents in the planning process by hosting several outreach sessions and aiding in the design of a GreenLink website.
