Presidential Inaugurations Transportation Logistics Planning

2009 presidential inauguration event, Washington, DC

Sam Schwartz served as lead consultant to District Department of Transportation (DDOT) on transportation logistics planning for the 2009, 2013, 2017, and 2021 Presidential Inaugurations.

Tasks included:

“Sam Schwartz has gotten more people out of cars and into transit, on bikes and ferries, or just plain walking than any other company. It’s no wonder Washington called them in for the inauguration of President Obama.”

– Paul Steely White, Former Executive Director, Transportation Alternatives

  • Overall management and production of DDOT’s Inauguration Traffic Operations Plans

  • Inter-agency coordination

  • Identification of TDM strategies to reduce reliance on passenger vehicles, including:

    • Promoting transit, walking, and biking

    • Preparation and printing of walking maps

    • Preparation of bus routing maps

    • Preparation and printing of staffing maps

    • Design of special traffic signs

    • Strategic review of transit and pedestrian plans

The walking maps included essential wayfinding and security information for the day of the event and were reproduced in seven different languages, with more than half-million copies distributed. Additional maps and planning documents were prepared for the 2017 Women’s March on Washington.
