Hillsborough Vision Zero action plan

Hillsborough Vision Zero volunteers with bike lane

For more than a decade Tampa Bay has consistently ranked among the worst places for pedestrian and bicycle safety. The Hillsborough Metropolitan Planning Organization hired Sam Schwartz to help develop a Vision Zero program that has attracted the commitment of a broad cross-section of stakeholders beyond the usual traffic professionals. The program culminated in a Vision Zero Action Plan that mobilized a coalition around the goal of zero traffic deaths. Four unique strategies with measurable goals were formulated: “Paint Saves Lives”; “One Message, Many Voices”; “Consistent & Fair” and “The Future Will Not Be Like The Past.” A focus on serious incidents led to the identification of 20 severe crash corridors, which allowed state and local coalition members to direct resources to areas where they could have the greatest safety impacts.
