Transit tram on street in downtown Oranjestad

The Government of Aruba retained Sam Schwartz to assist in implementing a 2.6 kilometer-long tram system, which now operates from the Oranjestad cruise ship terminal up Main Street and back to the terminal. Sam Schwartz reviewed plans and specifications for the tram, track, maintenance facility, and other support structures and made appropriate recommendations. Sam Schwartz assisted the government in:

  • selection, procurement, manufacture, and testing of the tram

  • design, procurement, and installation of the track layout

  • design and construction of the maintenance facility, and

  • formulation and implementation of the operations plan.

The system employs battery-powered doubledeck cars that reduced construction time and infrastructure costs. The tram’s popularity among tourists and citizens, and the absence of unsightly poles and wires, is helping to revitalize the downtown commercial district. In 2014, Sam Schwartz’s work was recognized with the highest award from the American Council of Engineering Companies.
