Rutgers University-Newark Campus Washington St. Bike Lane

bike rack and bike lane, Washington St., Newark, New Jersey

Rutgers University’s Newark campus retained Sam Schwartz to design bicycle facilities along a half-mile stretch of Washington Street, which extends through the heart of the campus. Washington Street’s then-current design created an unsafe situation for the motorists travelling along the through lanes, motorists parallel parking, bicyclists and pedestrians.

The firm proposed a total restriping of the roadway in order to offer 3 clear travel lanes, parallel parking areas and a dedicated bike lane. The revision to the roadway striping provided improved direction to motorists, increased the parallel parking supply along the corridor and protected bicyclists with a buffer separating bicycles from vehicular traffic. The Washington Street bike lane was the state’s first bike lane on a major downtown thoroughfare.
