NYCT + MTA On-Call Traffic Engineering Services

For well over a decade, Sam Schwartz has been providing exclusive On-Call Traffic Engineering services for both New York City Transit and MTA Bus Company. Sam Schwartz uses traffic engineering tools and mass transit experience to improve bus operations and reduce delays. Example assignments have included:

  • To improve pedestrian safety at the complicated intersection beneath the elevated Myrtle-Wyckoff station, Sam Schwartz developed bus re-routings as well as a host of pedestrian safety recommendations to simplify vehicular and pedestrian activity and reduce crashes.

  • To support bus tracking and service management software, Sam Schwartz reviewed staff protocols, practices, and software capabilities, helping NYCT to maximize service management.

  • At the 126th Street Bus Depot, the firm developed traffic mitigations to allow uninterrupted operations and improve traffic safety during an adjacent RFK Bridge ramp construction project.

  • The intersection of Fordham Road/Pelham Parkway and Boston Road in the Bronx was notoriously complicated, generating queues of up to a mile during the peak period. Sam Schwartz found opportunities to reduce delays with short- and long-term interventions.

  • For the expansion of the Gateway Center Mall in Brooklyn, Sam Schwartz analyzed proposed plans for an off-street bus terminal to ensure designs met NYCT and MTA’s needs.

  • Sam Schwartz analyzed operations at the South Ferry Bus Terminal to determine optimal use of the facility, including signal phasing changes in the surrounding street network to reduce bus delays, schedule improvements to reduce the number of buses laying over in the terminal, and other treatments to improve the passenger experience.
