Haven Square plaza

Sam Schwartz worked with Columbia University Irving Medical Center (CUIMC) on the proposed creation of a pedestrian plaza on Haven Avenue, between West 169th Street and Fort Washington Avenue, which was previously used for vehicle traffic and parking/loading. Sam Schwartz conducted a thorough traffic analysis of closing the street to vehicles, developed a neighborhood plan to accommodate displaced parking, worked on the plaza design to allow for patient pick-up and drop-off, and worked with the University to develop a goods delivery plan to reduce on-street truck congestion and maintain facility operations. Sam Schwartz also worked closely with the New York City Department of Transportation on the University’s application to the Plaza Program, presenting at several community workshops and Community Board meetings. The resulting plaza adds over 1.3 acres of new public open space to the community and provides a gathering place for area employees, residents, and students.

Sam Schwartz recently completed the requisite quarterly traffic analysis and reporting to NYCDOT monitoring the affects of the plaza on traffic and pedestrian circulation. The firm is currently working with CUIMC on an advanced phase of the plaza to incorporate more permanent features.
