CTA Bus Electrification Feasibility Study

Transit bus on Chicago street

Sam Schwartz was retained by the Civic Consulting Alliance to conduct an electric bus feasibility study for the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA). This study seeks to determine the optimal plan for CTA to convert to an all-electric fleet. Sam Schwartz has conducted detailed analysis of current bus schedules to determine what service is compatible with different electric bus technologies. We have studied other important considerations such as the social equity of benefits/impacts and the changes needed to bus garage infrastructure and operations. This has included simulating potential approaches to providing charging infrastructure on-route and at bus garages. Ultimately we will also provide year-by-year cost modeling of the fleet transition strategies.

All these facets of the study are informing agency decision-making and building consensus for a fleet electrification strategy. The final fleet electrification plan will establish a complete timeline for CTA’s adoption of electric buses and supportive infrastructure.
