Wicker Park Master Plan

Chicago, IL

SSE prepared a vision for transportation along the commercial corridors which comprise the Wicker Park and Bucktown neighborhoods in Chicago, Illinois. These corridors maintain important components of vehicular, rail and bus travel that are supported by a community that values pedestrians and bicyclists. SSE analyzed these components, along with parking and employer-based transportation demand management strategies with the primary goal to reduce automobile dependence, while making all travel safe, cost effective, and enjoyable. Recommendations included pricing the parking in the area at the market rate, locations for off-street parking lots, creative solutions to add more bike parking, improvements to the neighborhood's intersections to restore priority to pedestrians and bicyclists, feasibility of a community bus circulator, and safety improvements for all users.

Implementation began immediately after the plan was finalized. Public bus trackers were installed in area businesses; follow-up studies were conducted to consolidate loading zones and determine the mode splits of people shopping in the neighborhood; market-rate on-street parking was established; and Chicago's first on-street bicycle parking space is expected to be installed in the neighborhood. All of these improvements were a result of SSE's recommendations in the plan.
