New York Mets/Citi Field

Queens, NY

SSE was retained by the New York Mets to provide transportation planning and traffic engineering services during construction of the new Citi Field Stadium. Citi Field was being constructed on the parking lot adjacent to the existing Shea Stadium, removing 2,100 parking spaces from use. To address the displaced parking, SSE focused first on transportation demand management techniques to shift drivers to other modes of transportation. The primary strategy was increasing transit use on the existing NYC Subway and LIRR lines adjacent to the stadium and introducing an additional modal option — a new ferry service. To attract these riders, SSE coordinated with various agencies to vastly improve service on these modes. Usage of transit to and from Mets games nearly doubled in one year, going from a historic 24% level to a sustained 46% level. This resulted from improvements such as the reconfiguration of transit stations; the inauguration of Express Subway service after games; increased LIRR service; and public service announcements encouraging transit usage.
