Canal Street Park

Manhattan, NY

SSE was hired by the New York State Department of Transportation to mediate a design dispute between the State and the Tribeca community. The community sued the State of New York to prevent the implementation of a plan that would allow 12 lanes of traffic through the intersection of Canal Street and Route 9A and decrease the size of Canal Street Park. SSE reconfigured the intersection to reduce the number of traffic lanes, improve crossing conditions for pedestrians, and return Canal Street Park to its original size. The final plan improved vehicular and pedestrian access while restoring a historic park to this intersection.
