Jeffrey Smithline, P.E., PTOE

Vice President, Director of Traffic Engineering

Jeffrey Smithline, P.E., PTOE, joined SSE in 2009 as Director of Traffic Engineering for SSE’s New York City headquarters and was promoted to Vice President in 2011. He currently serves as Project Director or Project Manager for over 50 active projects within the Traffic Engineering group.

Jeff has managed a wide range of projects, from traffic impact studies to concept development studies for complex highway interchanges. He has performed numerous traffic analyses and studies for both the public and private sectors, and specializes in traffic and pedestrian safety and circulation, transportation elements of master plans, site access and access management, traffic calming, alternative analyses, parking studies, and traffic simulation. Jeff has specialized training in several traffic analysis and simulation software packages such as VISSIM, Synchro/SimTraffic, HCS, SIDRA, and RODEL.

Jeff is currently leading the transportation analyses for multiple Environmental Impact Statement projects in New York City, serving as a technical director for the World Trade Center reconstruction transportation planning and logistics project, and providing schematic design and work zone traffic control services for the redevelopment of NYU Langone Medical Center. He also lends his transportation planning expertise to SSE’s travel demand management and bicycle and pedestrian planning projects. With prior companies, Jeff has managed projects for the New York City Department of Transportation (DOT), the New Jersey Turnpike Authority, NJDOT, and NJ TRANSIT, as well as for various counties and municipalities in New Jersey. He has also provided expert testimony in front of zoning and planning boards in New York and New Jersey.

Jeff obtained a B.S. in Civil Engineering and M. Eng. in Engineering Management from Cornell University. He is a registered professional engineer in New York, New Jersey, and Florida and is certified as a Professional Traffic Operations Engineer. As an active member of the Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE), Jeff serves on the Executive Committee of the Pedestrian and Bicycle Council and is a member of the Ethics Standing Committee. He also volunteers his time as an ACE Mentor, bringing his enthusiasm for engineering and problem solving to high school students with an interest in the architecture, construction, and engineering industry.
